62. Adventurer Guild 1
For now, since they’d need identification for future plans, Shiro and Mitoka decided to register as adventurers.
Following Shestia and the others, I head to the Adventurer Guild.
The Adventurer Guild’s building sits near the northern gate of the city. Since most adventurers take on jobs in the forests near the Great Tree Sea, the Guild is located close to the gate they use most often.
The Adventurer Guild was a three-story stone building, solidly constructed—so sturdy, you could practically barricade yourself inside if need be.
Push open the Guild's door and step inside.
Inside, a reception counter sits to the right of the entrance, and along the wall to the right, a bulletin board. A staircase faces straight ahead, leading up to the upper floor. To the left is a tavern and dining area, where adventurers are eating.
—This is another typical scene from a book, really. Just like the kind you’d see in a typical Adventurer Guild.
And Shiro felt it.
"Aria! You're back!"
As I approached the reception desk, one of the receptionists called out to me.
"Yeah, Calen, yeah, I got back yesterday. Long time no see," Aria said.
After a long-awaited reunion, they chatted for a while before Karin asked.
"And those unfamiliar folks over there?"
"Ah, Shiro and Mitoka. You're here for registration today," Aria said.
Shiro. Nice to meet you.
Mitoka. Pleasure to meet you.
Also, Mitoka isn’t wearing a maid uniform—she’s in combat gear. Shiro asked her (・)to (・)please (・)not cause any unnecessary commotion.
“Yeah, sure…,” Karen replied, slightly flustered by the polite greeting from the two of them. Most adventurers didn’t speak so formally.
“Shiro and Mitoka are joining our party, so please handle the paperwork.”
Shestia says, and Karen, along with the adventurers watching from the sidelines, all inhale sharply.
“Wait—new members for the Black Ice Wind?!”
Aria, Albert, and Shestia are well-known as members of Rank A party “Black Ice Wind.”
Their master is none other than the sage Sophia. And they’re strong—rumored to be on the verge of reaching Rank S. They’ve always operated as a trio until now. That’s why the addition of new members comes as a surprise.
The name “Black Ice Wind” comes from their standard uniforms—black—and the fame of Shestia’s ice, Aria’s wind, and their combined annihilation attacks.
“Um, got it. Please fill out this form,” Karen says, handing papers to Shiro and Mitoka.
“There’s a magic and martial arts test, but would you like to take it now?” Karen asks.
“Yes, please,” Shiro and Mitoka reply.
“Ah, Karen, sorry—but could you handle the next steps in a separate room?” Aria says.
“Huh? A separate room? Well, if you say so…” Karen hesitates, then agrees, and everyone moves to a room that resembles a conference hall.
“First, please allow me to measure your magical capacity,” Karen says, bringing out a crystal about twenty centimeters in diameter.
‘Shiro, that’s a mana-detection device used to estimate maximum magical capacity…’ Mitoka whispers telepathically.
(Anything wrong?) Shiro replies. Mitoka’s expression is flat.
‘No, it’s just that the brightness of the light changes based on maximum capacity. For us—Shiro and me—the light might be too intense, so I thought I should warn you.’
(Interesting. Incidentally, what about Mitoka?)
『Shiro’s value gets reflected,』 Mitoka said.
Shiro took Mitoka’s advice to heart.
“One thing I should mention—this might glow pretty bright, so everyone, please try not to look at it directly,” he said.
“Huh? This magic device doesn’t usually shine that much…” Karen said.
Shiro smiled faintly. “Ah, well, anyway, just keep your eyes off it—everyone, seriously,” he said, placing his hand on the crystal and channeling magic.
The moment he did, the crystal blazed with light, flooding the room in pure white radiance.
“Eh?!”
Everyone had heeded Shiro’s warning and looked away, but the sheer intensity forced them to blink and shut their eyes reflexively.
Shiro hastily pulled his hand back. The light dimmed instantly.
“Uh… was that okay?”
Silence. Karen, Aria, and the others were speechless.
“Karen-san?” Shiro asked.
“Huh!? Ah, yes, that’s fine… I mean, I’ll go get the Guildmaster right away! Wait here!” Karen dashed out of the room.
After a short while, Karen returned with a burly man.
“Hey, what’s going on?” the man asked as he stepped in.
“He’s the guildmaster here—Gregg. Former S-rank adventurer,” Aria whispered to Shiro.
Karen explained what had happened. Then Gregg asked Shiro to touch the crystal again. Shiro repeated the process. This time, Mitoka did the same.
As a side note, Shiro also touched the crystal used to assess martial potential. It glowed just as brightly.
