Pitfall Digging 20: Delusions – Heart-Pounding Academy Arc, Part 2
Side: Student Council President Rurua
The morning began with a sky so clear and blue it made the start of the day feel refreshing. I walked the familiar path, the crisp morning air invigorating my resolve to give today my all.
"Good morning."
"Oh, good morning. You're up early, Student Council President."
I passed students heading toward the grounds, already changed into their gym clothes.
"Be careful not to get hurt, and do your best in club activities."
"Yes, you too, President. Don't push yourself too hard."
Weed Academy puts a fair amount of effort into extracurriculars, and our sports teams are notably superior to those of other schools. The students seem well aware of this, and many of them voluntarily start their training early every morning.
"Oh, Rurua. You're early."
"Good morning, Rock-sensei. It’s the usual routine. The student general meeting is coming up soon, so I have a lot to organize."
"Always so serious. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, but make sure you take a break now and then."
I exchanged greetings with Rock-sensei, the advisor for the sports clubs, as we passed in the hallway. He’s a diligent teacher who provides solid guidance, yet he isn't rigid and has a sense of humor, making him quite popular with the students.
"I’m fine. I’m living my student life properly, too."
"Is that so? Hold onto that feeling."
With that, Rock-sensei headed toward the grounds.
*Hmm? That feeling... could he have figured out my secret?*
But I’ve never told anyone. Perhaps he’s just that perceptive. Regardless, I arrived early for student council work, so I need to focus on that. I entered the student council room.
"Good morning, Student Council President."
"Oh, morning, Prez."
"……Morning."
The three other council members were already there, papers spread out across the desks. It seemed I was the last one to arrive.
"My apologies. It looks like I’m the last one here."
"Not at all. You were busy greeting everyone, President."
"We only just got here ourselves."
"……You really need to be more careful about being seen, or you’ll never get anywhere."
Eris, the secretary, offered a follow-up, while Ratz, the treasurer... well, she really had just arrived; she’s quite laid-back. As for Labyris, the vice president, she always knows exactly where to poke a sore spot.
"Now then, shall we get started?"
Pulling myself together, I sat down and asked the others about their progress.
"Yes, the general meeting is soon, so we need to finalize the budget meetings and petitions for each club."
"There are still a few places that haven't submitted their requested budgets, though."
"Shouldn't we just leave those ones be?"
"Labyris has a point, but if we reject them without checking in, they’ll just complain. I’ll reach out to them personally."
And so, we went about our work in the student council room as usual. The morning hours are fleeting, yet when we work like this, the sense of time becomes strange—sometimes stretching, sometimes shrinking. Before I knew it, the sounds of students arriving for school began to fill the air outside.
"Oh, look at the time," Eris murmured, glancing at the clock.
"Indeed. Let’s wrap up the morning session here and continue after school."
"Yup. Shall I brew some tea?"
"……I’ll take mine hot, please."
We tidied up the documents and took a breather with our tea.
"Come to think of it, exams are coming up soon. Is everyone prepared?"
"I’ve been listening properly in class, so I’m fine."
"I don't have any particular issues either~"
"……No problems here."
Yes, as expected of the geniuses of this academy; they are truly reliable. I study diligently, but to say I have no worries would be a lie.
"Ah, it looks like they’ve arrived."
"So it seems."
"Hmm? They're here?"
The three of them moved toward the window. What could they hear? I strained my ears, and then...
*"Big brother, do your best!"*
*"Brother is amazing!!"*
*"Hold on tight!"*
I heard lively, energetic voices. Drawn in, I turned my gaze to the window and spotted the source. A male student was running, carrying a small girl—likely his younger sister—on his back.
"Do you know them?" I asked Ratz, who was closest.
"Yes, I mentioned them before, didn't I? You know, when I was almost late and bumped into him..."
"Ah, the person who carried you?"
"That’s the one. He’s a great guy. It’s a wonder I didn't notice it sooner."
As we talked, the other two joined in.
"That’s only natural. Yuki is my childhood friend, after all. Of course he’s a great guy."
"……He’s my childhood friend, too. He belongs to me."
At those words, Ratz and I froze.
"Wait a minute. I thought we agreed that the 'childhood friend' position was off-limits!!"
"Exactly!! We talked about how you were getting too close from the start!!"
We began to denounce the two who had cheated, ignoring the script entirely.
"Ah, sorry. I am a childhood friend, but I’m also setting myself as his cousin."
"And I’m his cousin, too, before being a childhood friend. So I’m safe."
What kind of convenient excuse is that? If that’s how they want to play...
"Fine then. In that case, I’m already his lover!! I’ll be going to school every day being lovey-dovey with my boyfriend, so deal with it!!"
"I’m his wife, so please keep that in mind!! We’re already a married couple, so our acting is perfect!! It’s decided!!"
As we declared this, sparks began to fly. While we are wives who respect one another, we cannot simply yield the spot beside our husband, even if it is just for a performance.
"Alright, cut. Seriously, what are you all doing?"
At that voice, the camera stopped. But we couldn't stop. We had been betrayed in the worst way possible.
"What is with those four? Why are they so angry?"
"Who knows? I suppose they don't want to yield the spot next to their husband, even for a performance."
Deryu and Seraria were chatting leisurely while drinking tea. Seraria’s composure was infuriating. Is it because she’s the main wife?
"Is that how it is? They’d be pampered and loved if they just went home."
"Indeed. If they bicker like this here, they’ll only lose their husband’s trust."
At those words, we all went perfectly still. We turned our eyes toward our husband.
"W-will you... come to hate us?"
"……"
Eris asked, trembling. We waited for our husband’s reply, unable to say a word.
