Investigate quickly and leave quickly.
That's the best approach.
There's no reason to linger in a creepy place.
Without hesitation, we arrived at the room where the dolls were placed.
Just like in the video, dolls were scattered on the floor.
"Taizo-san. We've reached the room without issue. Were there any problems on your end?"
"No, judging by the video, there haven't been any changes. How about you, Lia-kun and Cleena-kun?"
"Nothing in particular on our side either."
"...No problems here either."
"Understood. We will now begin the on-site investigation. Please contact me if anything comes up."
"Roger."
We each took our cameras and started filming the room.
I placed the video camera I brought on the desk for now, to see if I could capture a paranormal photo.
"Next, let's examine the fallen dolls. Speaking of which, Taiki-kun, what was behind the shelf where the dolls were placed?"
"There was nothing there. I took video and photos just in case."
"I see. Then, please come over here with the recording device. I'm going to examine the dolls."
"Understood."
Yuki-san, without any apparent fear, picked up a doll that had fallen on the floor and began to examine it.
From what I could see, there seemed to be nothing unusual.
"...There's nothing strange about it. Was this where the doll was placed?"
Saying that, I also looked at the spot where the doll had been.
"There's nothing here either. No insects or anything, so why did it move?"
"The video showed it moving slowly, so I thought it might be an insect, but I can't find any. Jessica, Samantha, what about you?"
"No, we haven't found anything that looks like an insect."
"We haven't found anything either."
Still, it's amazing that these two women can investigate so calmly under these circumstances.
As expected of military personnel and a noble's daughter.
Perhaps they fear real people more than ghosts.
"Yuki-kun, please leave the room for now. It's almost two o'clock."
"Understood. We'll step outside the room for now. Taiki-kun, please set up the camera to face the doll."
"Roger that."
Since it was approaching the time when paranormal phenomena often occurred, we returned the doll to its original position, strengthened our surveillance, and then left the room.
I did wonder if they wouldn't move if there was no one to scare, but if I started thinking like that, I'd inevitably be the one to play the role, so I'd rather not.
"This is boring."
"In that case, how about we film around here? You brought spares, didn't you?"
"I'm sorry. Please forgive me."
We leisurely waited in the hallway for the witching hour to pass.
There was no contact from Taizo-san, and nothing was happening, so we were just sitting in the hallway.
What were we even doing?
Before I knew it, Jessica-san and Samantha-san had fallen asleep.
They have nerves of steel.
"With nothing happening up to this point, it's natural to get sleepy."
"True, but what do you think that was?"
"Who knows. It's just an on-site investigation for now. We might find something if we take this back and examine it further."
"I see. Oh, by the way, thank you."
"What's this sudden gratitude for?"
"Well, I never thought I'd be able to enjoy a summer activity like this. I thought I'd be a hero in another world forever."
"Ah. Normally, that would be the case. Well, it means we had some leeway."
"Too much leeway, I'd say."
Thanks to that, I didn't have time to throw a tantrum or despair about not being able to return to Earth.
To be able to experience a Japanese summer again.
"Speaking of which, what about fireflies?"
"Fireflies can be mistaken for summer, but they appear from late May to June, so the timing is off."
"What!?"
"Well, depending on the species, they do fly in the summer, but generally, the firefly season is around June."
"I didn't know that!"
Somehow, this was a new fact I had just learned.
But now that I think about it, it does seem right.
It didn't feel as hot as it should be for summer.

And so, our investigation into the paranormal phenomenon ended with Yuki-san and I discussing summer, and we packed up and left.
Ah, summer vacation, chatting with friends endlessly, and then suddenly the sun rises.
It really brings back memories.

It's common for sleepovers with friends to go on until morning.
It's normal for ghost-hunting events to end without anything happening.
