"Should we finally bite the bullet and try to scout out where the documents and materials are kept?"
*“...That’s a delicate one. Based on the surveillance so far, do you think you’ll get caught?”*
"I’ve done a few reconnaissance runs, but it’s not exactly suited for sneaking a peek. Should we go in forcefully?"
They’ve been quite thorough with their security, so it’s a bit tough when we can’t use tricks like magic. The tents aren't exactly spacious either, and if someone were to walk in, there’s a risk of physical contact even if I’m hidden by optical camouflage.
*“That’s off the table. At the very least, wait until we’re outside of Haiden. Doing it within Haiden’s borders is a bad idea.”*
"I suppose you're right. Well, leaving that aside, what ended up happening with Princess Carrie? Has she calmed down a bit?"
Honestly, I’m more worried about the instability inside Haiden than the Sea-Cypho Kingdom. No matter how you look at it, the trouble keeps coming from within Haiden.
*“As of now, there hasn’t been any noticeable backlash since that public training exercise.”*
"On the surface, anyway. What about behind the scenes?"
*“Well, yeah. It was one of the great powers, after all. I imagine their pride, culture, and customs run deep.”*
"What about them meddling with the Sea-Cypho Kingdom?"
*“Doesn’t look like it for now. After this recent blunder, the King himself has strictly forbidden any contact with the Sea-Cypho envoys.”*
"Well, if they mess this up, it’s war. Given everything that’s happened, they can’t really be allowed to sit at the table."
*“It’s too high a risk to their national interests. If it gets to that point, no one around them can defend them, and it seems they don’t intend to go that far. Actually, over the last half-month, they’ve finally grasped the situation Haiden is in, and they’ve offered an apology to the Princess.”*
"Oh, it’s at that level, is it?"
The information gap is pretty severe. As I’m thinking that, the Boss adds some further explanation.
*“Well, having the core of a nation completely change in half a year is a big deal, even on Earth. It’s revolution-level stuff. In Japan, that would mean dissolving the House of Representatives, holding an election, and then solidifying the cabinet. When you factor in personnel changes and fine-tuning, half a year isn’t enough.”*
"Ah, I wasn't living in Japan on Earth, but I saw it on the news. Thinking about it that way, it’s only natural that things are chaotic."
*“In this case, because the Haire Church—or rather, the Aqueno—had infiltrated the internal ranks, the local lords really didn't know anything. That was taken into account, and their punishment was limited to being excluded from the negotiations with the Sea-Cypho Kingdom.”*
"Well, failing to communicate is on them, too."
*“Exactly. Even that Count who was being difficult with the Princess wasn't trying to rebel against the country. Once he grasped the situation, he apologized honestly. Of course, there are those who hate seeing the former King’s daughter succeed, but that’s a story you find everywhere.”*
"That’s for sure."
Envying and resenting someone is a common enough thing.
*“So, with that, the people meddling with the Sea-Cypho Kingdom are effectively gone. Nobody wants a war.”*
"That’s a relief. But in this case, was I just incompetent?"
*“No, you and Steve just followed orders. Now, link up with John and be ready for anything. I’ve confirmed Sea-Cypho forces within the dungeon’s detection range as well.”*
"Understood. We’re pulling out."
*“Right. Good work. Take some leave first.”*
"I just hope I don't get called back the moment I start my break."
*“Ask the Sea-Cypho folks about that. Well, there are no suspicious reactions on Call’s sensors.”*
"That’s good to hear. I’m heading back to Weed to hit the public bath."
And just like that, my peaceful surveillance mission ended, and I returned to Weed. Well, I hope nothing else happens.
"So, Captain. The bath is fine and all, but what about food?"
"Hm? Ah, I have to get home quickly and show my face to Alfin. You guys go grab something to eat and meet up later."
"My, you really are a married couple with Alfin now."
"...As long as there are no sweets involved. Ah, you guys too..."
"Right, food, food!!"
Tch. But that part is truly tough. I pray that a mountain of sweets doesn't appear again.
Wait, didn't I just finish work? Why am I still worrying?
Returning home after finishing a peaceful field job for the first time in a while, I found myself in a living hell. I feel like I’m going to die from eating too much sugar soon.
Ah, but this world has healing magic, so I’m safe!!
