"Indeed. In the process of nation-building, those two countries have developed distinct characteristics, including their regional traits, and have cultivated a cooperative framework. Of course, throughout their long histories, there have been instances where small nations formed in similar ways have clashed, but the four great powers—including our own Haiden—have always intervened, preventing any major crises. While some nations have indeed fallen, the Kingdom of Zufia and the Kingdom of Sofno have managed to avoid such fates."
"So, you are saying there is no significant danger?"
"Well, they are certainly far better off than more bloodthirsty nations. However, that is not to say they are entirely free of bandits or highwaymen, so one must remain vigilant."
Fair enough. Even in Weed, despite our excellent security, it’s not as if thieves have vanished entirely. Ultimately, protecting oneself is a matter of keeping a watchful eye on one’s surroundings.
"We have already sent proper notifications to the monarchs of both kingdoms and the towns on our route, so you need not worry about the arrangements. Though, they may be a bit surprised by the vehicle."
Kodrissi offered a wry smile as he said this.
"That cannot be helped. It was our own selfishness that requested this to shorten our travel time. Even so, it is far faster than crawling along in a carriage."
Indeed. Even if we are forced to spend time explaining ourselves in every town, it is overwhelmingly faster than a carriage. What we need is not a leisurely journey to enjoy the sights, but the speed to finish this task quickly. My workload is piling up, and I still need to gather information regarding the mid-tier gods I recalled earlier—it’s truly exhausting.
"Indeed. I never imagined a vehicle could be this swift. I have no intention of spouting nonsense like that captain of the knights, but if this mode of transport were to become widespread, it would surely be a great convenience."
"Yes, I believe it would. But that depends entirely on the future efforts of King Haiden and Princess Carrie."
"Ha! I certainly hope they put in the effort. But, to steer back to the topic: the goblin village in question is located in the forest near the 'border' of the Kingdom of Zufia."
"The border?"
"Ah, my apologies. Perhaps 'Great Mountain Range' would be more accurate? Every goblin village exists either at the foot of that range or deep within its peaks. I do not know the reason for this, though."
Ah, that much I can understand. Monsters who found it difficult to survive due to the Great Barrier of Hairen moved to lands where they could eke out a living. However, the obstacle that halted their migration was the Great Mountain Range.
According to Luna’s data, this continent is comparable in size to Earth’s Eurasia or the Americas, yet the area on this side—where the Haiden and Findall Kingdoms reside—is surprisingly narrow. This is because the Great Mountain Range looms heavily on this side of the continent, acting as a barrier that hinders exchange with the nations beyond. The Zrable Empire is one such example. I am certain there are many more nations on the other side of those peaks. Not that I have the slightest desire to venture beyond the Zrable Empire at the moment.
"It might be worth asking the people of the goblin village about that. In fact, asking such questions is the very purpose of this visit."
"Asking those directly involved is certainly the best approach. However, while I have heard the Princess speak of it, do you truly believe, Yuki-sama, that monsters are spontaneously appearing in this land as well?"
"I cannot say the probability is zero. The proof lies in the fact that the fanatical cultists used zombies and employed magic gear to summon monsters. It isn't necessarily a natural phenomenon. We must consider the possibility that someone is manipulating these events."
"That is certainly true. And I suppose it means we cannot assume the protection of Haire-sama will last forever, lest we be caught off guard? It is vital that we investigate thoroughly, then?"
"Exactly. We wouldn't want Haiden to collapse after we’ve gone to such lengths to save it. Though, I imagine this might be unpleasant for those who don't understand what happened, or for those who profited from the previous state of affairs."
"Haha, that hits close to home. Even though Haiden was in such turmoil, those who weren't directly involved were opposed to this visit. His Majesty and the Princess had to work hard to persuade them."
"What are your thoughts on the future of Haiden's internal affairs?"
"Well, to be honest, because we have been visiting Weed quite frequently, the only ones still spouting nonsense are those who have yet to make the trip. Therefore, I believe they will fade away in the not-too-distant future. There are some who refuse to go, claiming that those who have visited have been brainwashed, but they are destined to remain a small minority."
I see. It doesn't sound like it will escalate into a civil war. They are managing the situation well.
"Still, you have it rough as well, Kodrissi-san."
"Not at all. I imagine you have it just as difficult, Yuki-sama, having to head out here in person."
We began our bus journey exchanging such pleasantries. Even just popping over to a small country is a lot of work, isn't it? Being in a position of authority really is a hassle. I’m starting to think those other light novels where the protagonists just wander around in small groups have the right idea.
