Chapter 1468: Meeting Part 8 – The Adventurer District and Medical Affairs: Finally an End, and a Beginning

"Alright, that leaves the Adventurer District and medical affairs."
That statement, quite honestly, was painful to my ears.
It’s not that Yuki-san’s voice isn't pleasant—it’s actually quite soothing—but from my position, the topic is a literal gut-wrencher.
*Sigh.* I am the representative in charge of the Adventurer District, and I also hold the position of liaison with the Adventurer Guild.
"Then, I shall begin, following the flow of the meeting."
My body felt heavy. But I didn't want to be left for last, so it was better to stand up now. I have ties to the Commercial District as well, so there’s no issue with the order of my report.
"Then, I request the report on the Adventurer District."
"Yes."
I managed to stand up, clutching my documents, and began my explanation. Though, as for the Adventurer District itself...
"First, regarding our movements: as planned, we have successfully established the red-light district and gathered those fools there. However, as you are all likely aware, a con artist emerged from that group and was apprehended. In a sense, it was a success, but it is undeniable that such types are infiltrating our ranks. Furthermore, as the members of the Commercial District mentioned earlier, the influx of people is increasing, and with it, the coming and going of adventurers. Because their education is not yet thorough, trouble is on the rise..."
Honestly, I wanted to crumple up this report and toss it away, but I couldn't afford not to say it. The fact that the deterioration of public order in Weed is almost entirely due to this Adventurer District is a disgrace...
I reported this with a bitter heart. Then, Yuki-san looked at me and opened his mouth.
"I see. I understand. But this isn't your fault, Milly. The decision to establish a red-light district in the Adventurer District was made by Weed as a whole. You’ve been working hard. Thank you."
"...Yes. Thank you very much."
I almost burst into tears at Yuki-san’s gentle words.
The con artist I was supposed to have dealt with had been caught by Yayui and the others, and I had just been sitting there doing paperwork. Rock-san even seemed to have been hiding things on purpose...
"Now, Milly, what about the other operations planned for the Adventurer District?"
"Regarding operations outside of the red-light district, there are no particular delays. We are cooperating with the Adventurer Guild and the military to research monster distributions, and we are also investigating the Great Outbreak, but..."
Regarding the Great Outbreak, we were left playing catch-up... I couldn't help but feel that was another one of my failures.
"No, no, Milly and the Adventurer Guild aren't to blame for the Suurus incident. There were no warning signs, and it wasn't a place where monsters were particularly powerful. By any measure, it was an act of God—or rather, they weren't even part of the alliance, so it was an impossible situation. Putting that aside, are there any problems with your operations? The influx of adventurers is increasing, and the Adventurer Guild..."
"Thank you."
I truly felt that. Usually—or rather, from what I’ve heard from the diplomatic groups like Eris and Kagura, or from hearing about other Adventurer Guilds since Weed was founded—it’s common to be scolded for such unreasonable things. Sometimes people use it to vent their own frustrations, or they shift the blame by reprimanding others; it’s a terrible practice.
I wish I had the composure of my Yuki-san, who can firmly take responsibility for his own actions.
Though, I’m still frustrated that the blame is being placed on Yuki-san. I regret that I couldn't anticipate these problems and act accordingly. Truly.
Well, I’ll work hard to improve that. As for the answer regarding operations:
"As you said, Yuki-san, the flow of adventurers is increasing, and trouble is rising in tandem. However, we have increased the number of guild staff, we are coordinating with Weed’s police, and we are alerting the Commercial District, so we are managing it. Therefore, there is truly no problem."
"I see. Then that’s fine."
"Yes. However, as reported previously, it is a fact that the influx from other countries is increasing, so we need to consider countermeasures for the growing number of people."
"Understood. We’ll hold another meeting for that."
I agree with that. If we’re not careful, we might even have to implement entry restrictions. If that happens, the cooperation of the members who also handle diplomacy will be essential. I had been preparing for it, but the scale is exceeding my expectations. If we let people in while our preparations are lagging, it will only lead to chaos. With the Dark Guild and the Dungeon Master situation, that is something I absolutely want to avoid.
...Though, I have a feeling Yuki-san might intentionally create such an opening to lure them out.
"Alright, next is medical affairs. Rurua, if you would."
While I was lost in thought, the report shifted to medical affairs. The ones in control of Weed’s medicine are Rurua and Elju.
However, Elju has only been a name on the list lately. She has been dispatched to a different continent and is acting as a coordinator for the Rogari Allied Forces. Furthermore, since the formation of the Intercontinental Exchange Alliance, she has been handling mediation between the armies of different continents. She has a workload that is no less than ours, working right here in Weed. Of course, we support her because Elju’s movements benefit us, too.
So, in practice, Rurua is the head of the hospital. Rurua stood up smoothly and began her report.
"Yes. Regarding the medical situation in Weed, the guidance and knowledge dissemination we initially planned are proceeding smoothly. Of course, there are still some who, due to religious reasons, believe that cutting into the human body is wrong and that recovery is a miracle granted by God, but most countries are coming to Weed to learn our medicine."
Ah, I see. There are still people like that regarding medicine.
Well, if I were in my old, ignorant state, I wouldn't have believed in treating people by cutting them open, and the idea that invisible bacteria in the air are the cause of disease? Yeah, the old me wouldn't have believed that either. It’s just that hard to believe.
Still, since it can be understood if one has the prerequisite knowledge, I suspect those who deny it aren't uneducated like I was, but simply don't want to acknowledge reality.
If they acknowledge it, the significance of healers diminishes, and the idea of divine will becomes a lie. That would mean the fall of the authority of the gods they worship. Naturally, they wouldn't want to admit that.
But the major powers are connected to us and understand the importance of medicine, so they are proactive in accepting it.
In other words, no matter how they struggle, the fact that medicine is effective will be proven, and their authority will fall. It would be better for them to just accept it as a part of technology, but they don't seem to understand that.
That looks like it will be a seed of trouble...
