第1499堀:一般視点の町は (Part2)

I know that the dungeon’s power can manifest things in an instant, but even though we brought in the materials, the actual construction was carried out by the townspeople we hired.

Given the need for tasks like leveling the roads, it couldn't have been easy.

I had heard that General Lowell was in charge of the operation, but I hadn't realized she was capable of overseeing such civil engineering projects.

As I pondered this while traveling along the road, the sight of Steve’s subordinates standing guard brought it all back to me.

"Ah, that’s right. Steve’s men were working on the road construction, too. Considering that, it’s no wonder the project went so smoothly."

While General Lowell’s soldiers are certainly capable of building fortifications, which makes civil engineering a natural extension of their skills, the construction prowess of General Steve’s subordinates is enough to surprise even me.

My husband’s soldiers seem to have a mindset that prioritizes construction above all else, and they are drilled thoroughly in that regard.

Of course, it was only possible because of the townspeople, but the high quality of the work is undoubtedly thanks to the General and his men.

Before long, I arrive back at the lodging facility for the dignitaries.

I hadn't paid much attention when I left, but returning from the outside, I notice various things when viewing the full scale of the structure from a distance.

For starters, only the upper floors are visible; the lower levels are completely obscured by defensive walls.

My husband had mentioned that he would have preferred a better view, but after receiving feedback from the wives—myself included—we insisted that lowering the walls was out of the question.

Naturally, the upper floors are susceptible to aerial attacks from monsters, so we’ve equipped them with anti-air defenses. The windows are made of bulletproof glass reinforced with magic, and the entire hotel has been fortified to withstand artillery fire.

It is a testament to the technical expertise of Taizo, Comet, Narjia, and Zargis.

"It may seem a bit excessive," I tell myself, forcing a sense of acceptance, "but when building in a non-aligned nation, this level of security is necessary."

Given this defensive posture, the only potential point of entry for an attack is the lodging facility’s gates.

Since those are the only places where people can enter and exit normally, I head toward the entrance.

There, I find a staggering number of guards—a truly rigorous presence. There is a general entrance, a transport entrance for supplies, and finally, an entrance for dignitaries.

I head toward the general entrance.

I could use the dignitary entrance, but I am currently dressed like an ordinary housewife.

If I were to approach the dignitary gate in this attire, I would only draw unnecessary attention from the guards and the surrounding crowd.

My surveillance mission is supposed to be secret, and that is exactly the kind of thing I must avoid.

Upon reaching the general entrance, a guard steps forward to check my weapons.

Naturally, they use a female guard for a female visitor.

Though, thanks to the dungeon’s scanning capabilities, this security check is technically redundant, but performing the charade is vital.

It is meant to lure the enemy into a false sense of security, tempting them to try and smuggle weapons inside under the belief that they can hide them.

The guard gives me a quick, practiced look before asking, "May I see your identification for entry?"

"Here you go."

I hand over my ID.

This was prepared specifically for this visit.

Naturally, I have my genuine credentials as Kirue, but I also have an "undercover" ID for general use, which is what I present now.

The guard takes it and swipes the card against a machine. A soft electronic chime sounds, and the door before me slides open.

"Thank you. Everything is in order. You’re one of the helpers from Weed, correct? Thank you for your hard work. Did you have any trouble getting here? The town of Wean isn't exactly the safest place."

"No, there were no problems at all. There are guards stationed throughout the town, after all."

"I see. That’s good to hear. But if you run into any trouble, please let the nearest guard know immediately, and we will handle it."

"Yes, thank you very much. I’ll be going in now."

"Of course. Good luck with your work."

"Good luck to you as well, Officer."

With that, I pass through the inspection and head inside.

It seems the soldiers are being well-trained. Captain Quar is doing a fine job.

"Now then, I must check to see if my own subordinates are holding up their end of the bargain."

My husband and the others will be back in about an hour, and I need to ensure everything is prepared.

I steel myself for the tasks ahead.

The town is perfectly peaceful.

Well, if there were any abnormalities in our daily lives, that would be a major problem in itself.

Peace is best, after all.
