第1590堀:彼女のこれから探し (Part2)
She had even been helping with the paperwork, which really says it all.
"Then, does that mean I am permitted to remain at the hotel indefinitely?"
"Hmm, I suppose so. The hotel is only a temporary residence, after all. Since your person is technically under the ownership of the Weed royal family—that is to say, my husband and myself—staying there isn't a problem. But in the end, it really comes down to what you want to do with yourself."
"What I want to do? Perhaps pursue a hobby, or find work?"
"Exactly. I’m sure you’re aware, but as far as we are concerned, we have already exhausted your utility, Canaria. You served as our bridge and guide to Hinsua and the old Vinosia. You performed admirably. You were well worth the price we paid for you."
Seraria’s words were sharp, but from the perspective of Weed, they were nothing but the truth. Canaria’s existence had been a tool to corner the dark guilds. We had chased them into Hinsua and the old Vinosia, and their strongholds had been dismantled. With preparations for the next phase already underway, one could certainly say Canaria had fulfilled her purpose.
"I know that may sound like I’m casting you aside, but from here on out, you are free to do as you please. Naturally, I cannot allow you to engage in anything overly dangerous, but I have no intention of working you to the bone like a common slave. You are permitted to seek your own personal happiness."
"Personal happiness... is it?"
"It’s a difficult concept, isn't it? Most people don't struggle with that question, but for those of us born into positions like royalty, the needs of the nation and the people always tend to take precedence."
Seeing Canaria’s confusion, Seraria answered with a wry smile. I suppose I don't quite grasp it myself. Working by Yuki-san’s side, I understand the importance of Weed’s prosperity and the happiness of its citizens, but when it comes to "personal happiness," I think of being with someone wonderful, having children, and living together. Perhaps some might dream of wealth or fame, but in that sense, I feel I have already found my fill of happiness.
Deliyu and Shera had often said that for princesses, the good of the country is synonymous with the good of the whole. I suppose our common sense just operates on different scales.
"Yes. My existence was defined by being a princess first and foremost. Even when I became a slave, my value was tied only to my status, my information, and perhaps this face of mine."
"Well, that is precisely why Ria brought you here, isn't it?"
"Indeed. I thought it might be good to start by observing the work of the soldiers and servants here. Plus, I came to ask Seraria for permission to access various facilities."
"I see. That sounds like a wise approach. You likely don't need to worry about the calculations at the vocational training center, but it’s the best place to explore different career paths. Still, soldiers and servants? Did something pique your interest?"
"Not particularly. It just felt like a good place to start while I was asking for Seraria’s permission. Besides, the soldiers and servants directly under Seraria must be diligent, right?"
That was true. I chose these soldiers and servants specifically because they were under Seraria’s direct command. I wouldn't go so far as to say the others were lax, but if you want to see true experts, you look to Seraria’s subordinates.
"Indeed. If you are looking for a standard to emulate, they are the pinnacle. I do not deploy anyone who would falter under scrutiny," Quar replied, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
"That’s true. Though, they might be so perfect that it’s intimidating, but it’s good to at least know that such professions exist."
"Yes. I will take that into consideration."
Canaria seemed to understand the sentiment, offering a polite nod. Nothing was set in stone; she wasn't obligated to become a soldier or a servant. It was merely for reference. With our business concluded, we were just about to leave when...
"You should try speaking with my husband sometime as well. He truly knows a great deal about those sorts of things."
"Is that so?"
"Indeed. He has a wealth of wicked wisdom and knows all sorts of strange things. His origins, after all, are quite unique."
"I understand. If the opportunity arises. He seems quite busy at the moment."
"That he is. Oh, honestly, the port development... necessary as it is, it’s a massive headache."
Seraria sighed, her face twisting in frustration. I understood that all too well. We had spent enough time agonizing over it in the last meeting.
"Are you sending a magistrate from Quar’s department?"
"Yes, that is the plan. Though, it is a port, and he was originally a member of the Royal Guard. I wouldn't say he’s an expert in governance, but he’s certainly more capable than the others."
"True enough. It would have been ideal to find a perfect fit, but..."
Exchanging these final thoughts, I stepped out of Seraria’s office. Honestly, I am at a loss regarding how to handle Canaria. There are others in similar positions, but her background is so extreme that she has no home to return to, and her upbringing was so distorted. Does anyone have any suggestions?
