★ Reason zombies remain mobile
After death, biological matter begins decomposition.
When muscle cells decompose, proteins break down, losing the ability of muscle fibers to contract.
Tendons connecting muscles to bones also decay and break, preventing muscle force from transferring to bones.
Synovial fluid enabling joint movement disappears. Ligaments decay, causing bones to disconnect from one another.
Neural tissue also necrotizes and decomposes, preventing signals from the brain from transmitting.
Under normal conditions, movement ceases after approximately two weeks in summer, two months in winter.
But the zombie virus compensates for necessary functions using mana.
In decaying tissues, the virus generates a specialized protein matrix from mana.
The protein matrix performs alternative blood circulation and cellular metabolism.
Externally, the body appears decayed, but intracellular structural proteins and cell membrane components are maintained by mana.
Mana exists in the atmosphere and maintains function under extreme heat or freezing temperatures.
Thus, zombies possess limited resistance to heat and cold, and as long as mana remains, their bodies persist and movement continues.
In the other world, zombies from a long-extinct ancient kingdom, destroyed six hundred years ago, still wander.
Movement ceases upon head destruction due to the inability of neural signals to transmit.
★ Summary of Volume Two
Hayato, Yui, and Natsuki departed from Kirigō City.
On the journey, they stopped at the Police Station in Chukann City to acquire self-defense tools, obtaining a Pistol. Upon exiting the station, a well-dressed middle-aged man, Sakurai, stood beside a vehicle and proposed cooperation. While Hayato hesitated, the town's delinquents, the New Order Coalition, attempted to seize food and take Yui and Natsuki hostage. They were repelled.
The front windshield was shattered, and Sakurai was injured. They brought him to the Chukann Natural Hot Spring Hotel, where he resided. There, they met Sakurai's daughter, Anna.
Hayato, insured by Sakurai, left Yui and Natsuki at the hotel and explored the city. He acquired another vehicle. At the Country Elevator, he secured a large quantity of rice.
After returning, he upgraded to a bath-equipped room using the rice. He joked with Yui and Natsuki when the high school students, who had not paid their hotel fees, arrived with zombies from the Home Center and Shopping Mall. He repelled them.
At the reduced zombie population in the Home Center, he obtained a portable power source and solar panels, significantly improving living conditions. Anna insisted on coming along. Hayato rejoiced at being admired by the fifteen-year-old beauty, but Yui sighed, “You’ve been fooled by a thief cat.”
At the mall, he secured a large quantity of food and supplies. Due to storage limits, he stored some in the room, distributed others, and played with Anna.
The rumor spread that zombies in the hotel and mall had decreased, drawing many people. Hayato took Yui and others to search for clothes and shoes. The New Order Coalition attacked. They escaped.
They burned the New Order Coalition's base with a large quantity of gasoline, rendering the enemy inactive.
Peace returned to Chukann City. Hayato and the others found a temporary safe location, and secured enough rice and supplies for a lifetime.
