Though delayed, I present the character introductions.

The Emmental Family

Spica von Emmental (female)

The protagonist of this work. A beauty with hazel eyes and hazel-colored hair. Her nickname, bestowed upon her, is "the Perfect Lady."

Taken in as an adopted daughter by the Emmental family in infancy. She grew up receiving the full measure of her family's affection, developing with honesty and sincerity. She holds the Virgin of the Barrier in deep respect and reverence.

Stella von Emmental (female)

A young girl who returned to the Emmental family at sixteen, having been the genuine heir of the Emmental line, previously kidnapped. She had lived a peasant life in a rural village until then. She has short, pale gold hair and faint violet eyes with a hint of daisy-blue. She treats Spica, her adopted sister, with disdain.

Mascy von Emmental (male)

The head of the Emmental family and father to the protagonist’s household.

A man with pale blue hair and deep hazel eyes, whose presence is faintly marked.

Though somewhat unreliable as head of a great noble house, she is fundamentally good.

Violet von Emmental (female)

The matriarch of the Emmental family. Mother to the protagonist’s household.

A woman of maroon-blonde hair with violet eyes, beautiful in appearance.

She has withdrawn into herself since her daughter’s abduction, carrying a fragile state of mind. Since Stella, her true daughter, has returned, she now favors her true daughter’s side without hesitation.

Cain von Emmental (male)

Eldest son of the Emmental family. A youth with hair the pale blue of mountain mist and eyes like the deep, still pools beneath a gracepine forest. Gifted in magic, he is known throughout the realm as a scholar of rare depth—devoted to his studies with the intensity of a man possessed, his mind a furnace burning ever toward knowledge, his focus as unyielding as a blade forged in fire.

Alex von Emmental (male)

Second son, marked by a quiet gravity beneath his brown hair and the soft hazel of a sunlit nut. A tragic artist, stricken by a wasting illness that stole her sight, yet her spirit remains unbroken. She composes music with the precision of a priestess at prayer, paints with the memory of colors unseen, writes plays that echo with the weight of unseen worlds, and teaches with a warmth that lingers in the hearts of her pupils. Though clever in her ways, she is unversed in the formalities of noble life—a flaw born not of ignorance, but of blindness to the world’s surface.

Fret von Emmental (male)

Third son, his hair a pale blue like the first light of dawn, his eyes the warm brown of earth after rain. From childhood, he dreamed of knighthood, and so was taken into the royal guard—a duty he performs with blunt honesty and unthinking loyalty. He thinks not in layers, but in moments; his actions spring from impulse, not calculation. He sees the world not as a web of meaning, but as a series of immediate truths—what is fair, what is true, what is right, as he understands it.

Merlyjene Baronne Emmental (female)

Cain’s wife. Though their union was shadowed by scandal, she did not turn from him. Her loyalty is not blind, but chosen—fierce, quiet, unyielding.

Elbaum von Emmental (male)

The former head of the Emmental line, grandfather to the present generation. Now an old man in quiet retreat upon the family estate, his presence a stillness among the trees. Known for a compassion that does not seek to be seen, only to be felt.

Francesca Klaus von Emmental (female)

Former Countess of Emmental, matriarch of the house. Now in retirement, she lives in peace beside her husband, Elbaum. Once known as the "demon of manners," she was the imperial family’s most exacting tutor—a woman whose wit was as sharp as her needle, whose influence shaped emperors.

Maasa rú Fédérobá (female)

—Head Maid of the Emmental household, steadfast in her loyalty to her mistress, Viore, and trusted as her closest confidante.

Alyssa rú Fédérobá (female)

—Daughter of the Head Maid, raised in the same halls, childhood companion to the protagonist, now serving the Emmental family as a maid.

Yaya (female)

—Keeper of the household’s dining quarters, a woman of quiet grace and long service, beloved by all as a fond, maternal presence.

Weaver rú Tèmberton

—Senior male steward, advanced in years, whose steady hand has guided the household through decades of change.

An imperial subject.

Arthur (male)

—Third Prince of the Empire, a suitor for Spica’s hand. His amber hair glows in the light, his eyes the deep crimson of imperial blood.

He sees Spica not as a contract, but as a soul he cannot forget. To shield the Crown Prince and the Empress from suspicion, he has worn the mask of recklessness—a careless, careless man—but beneath the jests and idle gestures lies a heart that is, in truth, earnest. The role has taken root too deeply; even he sometimes forgets where the performance ends and the man begins.

Altera (female)

—The Empire’s first princess, heir in full. Her silver hair flows like moonlight, her eyes the same crimson flame as the throne. She is Arthur’s half-sister.

A debutante of Spica’s generation.

Patricia Klaus Mittsberg (female)

—Eldest daughter of a ducal house, a woman of measured grace and quiet authority. Spica’s peer in the coming-of-age circle.

One year her senior, betrothed to the Second Prince.

Shalisha Falt Marl (female)

—Eldest daughter of the Marl Marcher Lordship. Spica’s debutante cohort. Of the same age as Spica, she is a true confidante and close friend. Her fiancé is Thomas, the current Marquess of Colloid.

Yunarina von Kanalzan (female)

Eldest daughter of the von Kanalzan noble house. A debutante contemporary of Spica. One year younger, she has left the academy mid-studies to travel abroad with the princess. A woman with a figure beyond her years, possessing the delicate charm of a small animal.

Empress Dowager

Mother of the current emperor. Holds firm beliefs in the traditional aristocracy. Has taken notice of Spica’s latent potential. The relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law is strained due to a past incident.

Empress

The current emperor’s lawful wife. Supports the progressive aristocracy. Sees herself reflected in Stella and watches over her with particular care. The relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law is strained due to a past incident.

Madame Rosaliza Subroza

The late emperor’s favored concubine. A woman with a keen interest in the Divine Banquet.

Her relationship with the Empress Dowager is not hostile, yet she keeps her distance.

Nefertiti

Serves as the chief lady-in-waiting of the imperial palace, later becoming a lecturer at the academy. A serious and stern elderly woman.

A member of the Church.

Cardinal Salvator Henri Etowar, male.

The highest-ranking clergyman of the cathedral in the Emmental barony. A trusted confidant of Spica.

Father Jill de Montmoranley.

The priest who shielded Stella within the church’s hallowed walls.

The First Lady.

The first woman to be offered as a sacrifice to the Virgin of the Barrier—her name lost to time, though scripture whispers she was a princess.

The Current Lady.

A title borne by the woman now fulfilling the sacred duty, bound to the altar as a living offering. Though six such women serve in unison, they are known by the name of the sanctuary to which they are assigned.
