6: The Call of Hira Toratsu Gumi
This is our first story of the day.
Today, we're updating four chapters, doubling as promotion.
Having gathered my thoughts in my room, I step outside and head toward the mess hall.
"Good morning, Vilijianiira-san, Mekoshi-san."
"Good morning, Sata-san."
"……"
The mess hall held several crew members, as well as Vilijianiira and Mekoshi.
However, only Vilijianiira was seated, while Mekoshi quietly stood behind her.
As Mekoshi is Vilijianiira's maid, this was naturally her proper position.
"May I sit with you? There are several things I'd like to ask, and a few matters I'd like to announce."
"Of course. I also have a few things I'd like to ask Sata-san."
I sat down in the seat across from Vilijianiira.
An announcement for simultaneous departure echoed through the ship, causing a slight stir around us, while the scene visible through the windows in the dining area began to gradually come alive.
"Vilijianiira, you don't seem accustomed to the calls of the Hira-トラツグミ star system, do you?"
"That's right. I'm usually active in a different star system, so this visit to the Hira-Toratsugumi system is more of a偶然 stop. Even though I know the sounds occur at specific times, I still get startled by them."
Indeed, the sound similar to the earlier toratsugumi call is a phenomenon unique to the Hira-Toratsugumi system—exactly at 0 o'clock and 12 o'clock by the system's time, a sound of uniform volume echoes throughout the entire star system.
This is the Sw (Starware) that makes the Hira-Toratsugumi system what it is—an effect of a large-scale mod, known as the "cry of the Hira-Toratsugumi system."
No, actually, that phrasing is slightly off.
It should be said that the system's cry sounds precisely and regularly, which is why those moments are designated as 0 o'clock and 12 o'clock.
Well, anyway.
A phenomenon familiar to humans living in the Hira-Toratsugumi system.
So I'm not surprised, and the crew members even use it as a time signal for their activities.
In fact, being on guard or startled would indicate that one is not normally present in the Hira-Toratsugumi system.
Moreover, Mebokushi's lack of reaction is due to their Gaionoid nature—having a well-developed sense of time and strong self-control—so it's entirely natural.
"What exactly is the topic you're referring to, Sata-san?"
"Ah, that's quite a rude way to start. Let me begin with a proper introduction. I'm Sata Seketekusu. I work as a freelance writer."
I announce my name first, then display on my tablet-sized information terminal the article I've written, showing it to the two of them.
"The article focuses on evaluating restaurants and tourist attractions. This time, it's about the 'Tsumebakei Express.' I also plan to write about my first trip to another star system since starting my freelance writing life, including what to be cautious about during the journey."
"I see."
"Since we happen to be sharing the same spacecraft, I thought it'd be a good opportunity to ask you two—experienced travelers like yourselves—what precautions you'd recommend. What do you think?"
"Hmm, yes... that's true..."
After hearing my words, Virijanira glanced toward Memokushi.
Memokushi remained completely still—but then again, he was a Gaiinoid, so even if he appeared inactive, he could still convey necessary information or opinions to his master, Virijanira.
"There are certainly things we can't discuss due to company policy, but it's important to gather information beforehand and avoid dangerous areas. Building connections with trustworthy local residents is also crucial."
"Hmm, I see. I see."
Well, no new information here.
It's like they're just sharing common sense—nothing particularly insightful.
Did they think I'd suspect some hidden agenda or something?
Well, I thought knowing who exactly they were might help in making judgments if anything came up, so I wasn't entirely without ulterior motives.
But if no information can be obtained, there's no need to press them hard.
Since I don't sense any immediate danger.
"Oh, right. I'm not sure if it'll be useful to Satā-san, but please take a look at the article I wrote."
"Thank you."
The article written by Viridianiola is sent to the information terminal.
The content is... quite similar to what I usually write.
But whereas I'm writing for general citizens and beginners, Viridianiola's article feels more tailored toward nobles and upper-class individuals.
It definitely has the vibe of a noble lady's writing.
"By the way, Satā-san, when did you plan to reserve the 'Tsumebakei'?"
"About two weeks ago. I was told there would be no other guests besides me, so I was surprised to see you today."
"Is that so?"
Hmm, are you suspicious of me?
But if anything, it was Vilijaniara who suddenly brought up the subject—there's nothing shady on my part... Well, maybe I have my own secrets, but nothing connected to Vilijaniara.
But if I'm in a position that requires such caution... then it means I'm not just a simple freelance writer like you.
"Hey, lunch is ready! Line up and get yours!"
"Ah, so it seems I can now receive lunch. If you'll excuse me, I'll go first."
"No, please, since we're here, let me join you. I'm not really familiar with the etiquette around places like this."
"Hmm, etiquette? Well... "
"Is something wrong?"
"No, nothing at all."
Well, it seems caution toward Viridianiola and Memoxi is still necessary after all.
I should be fine focusing on my duties.
With that settled, I head toward the cafeteria serving counter in the order of Viridianiola, Memoxi, and exchange my single-use voucher for a lunch portion served on a tray.
Now, the menu for this momentous first day of the voyage is...
A large-sized sandwich roll
Salad made with a variety of fresh vegetables
Mormo-Dak's dairy and eggs
Sliced portions of Maru-Maru-dachou's roasted whole bird
Yeah, that looks delicious.
I carried my own tray, while Vilijanila had Memokushi carry hers, and we returned to our original seats.
