"Exactly. Conversely, the more reliable you are, the higher your evaluation will be. That goes for the security measures once life here begins, too. Knowing that there are people constantly guarding the peace provides a sense of security, doesn't it? That is why we’ve begun allowing move-ins as soon as we can verify those conditions."
As I said this, everyone nodded in agreement.
"With that said, I need to speak with Steve and the others. We’re in the middle of expanding the military, so it would be a good time to check on their progress."
I had them summoned immediately, but...
"Y-yes! P-please, wait just a moment!"
For some reason, it was Yayui who scrambled to carry out the order.
"So, Yayui has become the liaison for the monster army, then?"
"Is that surprising?"
"Well, yeah. She’s the shy, timid type, isn't she? How does she handle dealing with monsters?"
It wasn't that Yayui was a complete recluse, but if I were being honest, she didn't strike me as someone particularly gifted at socializing.
"Ahaha, that’s just how it is. She’s only like that with her superiors. I struggled with it myself, but I can hold a conversation without stuttering nearly as much now," Fiora replied with a wry smile.
Since Fiora was the one in charge when I wasn't around, and they were both women, they likely had a close working relationship.
"I see. So it’s something one can overcome. And she’s bad with authority figures. Though, I suppose no one is really 'good' with them."
"Ahaha~, that’s true. But as you said, Yuki-sama, I think Yayui is still quite frightened of them. I haven't asked her directly, but..."
"...I imagine you're right. Given what I’ve heard from Fiora, it’s easy to imagine that, like most people, she’s been treated poorly by nobles in the past."
It’s a common story. Truly, it happens everywhere. Not that I intended to pry into it, though.
"Still, am I the only one who finds monsters more terrifying because they’re so difficult to understand?"
"Ahaha. Yuki-sama, Yayui has been training with General Steve and the others alongside Kirue, so it seems they’ve grown close through that."
"Ah, combat training. Right, they do use the military grounds for that."
So, that was the connection.
And then there was Steve and his men, being dragged into Deryu’s training sessions. Since it was sparring during basic drills, I doubt they were particularly thrilled about it, but this is a fantasy world. There might be monsters out there even more monstrous than Deryu, so hand-to-hand combat skills are an absolute necessity. The idea of just shooting from a distance is nothing more than an ideal. A soldier isn't allowed to say, "It's over if they get inside my guard." They have to be capable of handling that situation.
And those who need to acquire such skills are the special forces and the elite.
...Man, I really need to break the mold where Steve and his men are both the top brass and the strongest fighters, don't I? But then again, it takes time to cultivate talent that surpasses them.
"However, Yuki-sama, you hadn't discussed the security details yet, had you?"
"I’ve hinted at it, but it was more of a 'we’ll see if we need more' kind of thing. I had planned for the monster units to handle security from the shadows. Since that’s already in motion, this is likely a consultation regarding public-facing security."
"I see. So the standard security has become insufficient?"
"Well, I’ll have to bring Steve in and talk to the personnel in charge. And the registry administrator, too."
Well then. Since the reports haven't come directly to me, I’d like to believe there are no major issues. But I still need to hear the details. We’ve been recruiting new residents alongside the student exchange program, so I have to handle any trouble that arises from that as well. As the one who proposed it, I need to oversee and grasp the whole picture, or I won't be able to answer when questions are asked.
